1984 MODEL YEAR OVERVIEW
1984 was a big year for Vanagon sales in the USA which reached their peak in 1984 with 21,352 vans. This was the first full year with the new Water Boxer engine and buyers responded, taking delivery of on 45% more Vanagons compared to 1983.
As with the second half of 1983, all 1984 models were only available with a one engine choice, the 1.9L water-cooled, Water Boxer gasoline engine. For the first time Vanagons were now available with several modern looking metallic paint choices. 1984 also marked the first in a series of "Wolfsburg Limited Edition" Vanagon models with two to choose from - one version for the GL passenger van and another for the Camper model. |

Notable 1984 features:
There were only very modest changes from the 1983.5 Water Boxer Vanagons for 1984 and the only real change to the appearance was the addition of metallic paint choices. An interesting distinction is that the 1984 full camper model also included a removeable center swiveling seat as standard equipment, not an added option and window stickers describe this model as a "VANAGON 5-PASSENGER CAMPER". 1984 Visual Cues:
1984 vans kept the upper grille at the front of the van for interior ventilation with a pair of single round headlights mounted along side. Since all 1984 Vanagons have the water-cooled 1.9L boxer engine, all were equipped with a second, lower grille that provided cooling air for the front-mounted radiator. This two-grille look distinguishes all of the water-cooled Vanagons from the previous air cooled models. On the rear of the van there is a tiny clue that distinguished 1984 Vanagons from earlier models. Prior to 1984 the emblem on left side of the hatch included only the "Volkswagen" word. Beginning in 1984 and through 1987, this emblem placed a VW logo before the word Volkswagen. Like all Vanagons beginning in 1982 through 1991, the 1984 models had removable black plastic cooling air intake grilles on each side of the van, behind the rear-most windows. |
